Andrey Boreyko

Polish-Russian · 1957

Andrey Boreyko was born in St Petersburg in 1957 and studied conducting at the city’s Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. Early in his career he won prizes at the Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors in Katowice and, in 1989, at the Kirill Kondrashin competition in Amsterdam. He has since held a long series of posts in Europe and North America. He was music director of the National Orchestra of Belgium from 2012 to 2017 and of the Naples Philharmonic in Florida from 2014 to 2022, and he led the Warsaw Philharmonic as music and artistic director from 2019 to 2024. His repertoire reaches well beyond the standard works, with a particular place for Shostakovich and for composers of the late Soviet and post-Soviet period such as Valentin Silvestrov, whose Sixth Symphony he has recorded.
