Emmanuelle Haïm

French · 1962

Emmanuelle Haïm is a French conductor and harpsichordist, born in Paris in 1962. She studied piano, organ and harpsichord at the Paris Conservatoire, her harpsichord teachers being Kenneth Gilbert and Christophe Rousset, and then worked for some years with William Christie’s ensemble Les Arts Florissants. In 2000 she founded her own ensemble of period instruments and voices, Le Concert d’Astrée, which has been in residence at the Opéra de Lille since 2004 and with which she records for Erato. Handel’s Rodelinda with Glyndebourne Touring Opera in 2001 brought her wide notice as a conductor, and she was the first woman to conduct at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Besides her work in the opera house she is a regular guest of modern symphony orchestras, among them the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, mostly in Baroque repertoire.
