Conductor
John Adams
American · 1947
John Adams, born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1947, is one of the most frequently performed living composers and has had a parallel career as a conductor for several decades. He learned the clarinet from his father, played in marching bands and community orchestras as a boy and began composing at the age of ten. As a conductor he has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, among them the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where he holds the post of Creative Chair. His programmes usually set his own works beside music by other composers, from Haydn, Beethoven and Debussy to Sibelius, Ives, Stravinsky, Reich and Ellington. He is also the author of a memoir, Hallelujah Junction.
