Conductor

Kirill Petrenko

1972

Kirill Petrenko has been Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berliner Philharmoniker since the 2019/20 season, having been elected by the orchestra’s members in June 2015. Born in Omsk, Siberia, in 1972 into a family of musicians, he emigrated with his parents to Vorarlberg in Austria at eighteen and completed his studies in Vienna. His career was built largely in the opera house: as music director in Meiningen, where he conducted a much-noticed Ring cycle, then as General Music Director of the Komische Oper Berlin from 2002 to 2007, and from 2013 to 2020 as General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where he also led the Ring at the Bayreuth Festival from 2013 to 2015. Famously reticent with the press and meticulous in rehearsal, he is known for performances of rare intensity and clarity, and for a repertoire that ranges from the Austro-German core to Russian music, Suk, Korngold and Scriabin.
