Manfred Honeck

Austrian · 1958

Manfred Honeck, born in Nenzing, Austria, in 1958, is one of the most admired conductors of his generation, celebrated above all for his vivid, deeply considered accounts of the Austro-German repertoire. He came to conducting from within the orchestra: a string player, he spent years as a violist in the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera Orchestra, absorbing that tradition from the inside, before assisting Claudio Abbado and launching his own podium career. Since 2008 he has been Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, with whom his award-winning recordings have won international acclaim. His insider’s feel for the Viennese classics and for the great Romantic scores makes him an ideal guide to this programme of Mozart and Brahms.
