Barbican
The Barbican Centre in the City of London opened in 1982 on a site that had been heavily bombed in the Second World War. It was designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the same practice behind the surrounding Barbican Estate, and it is one of the best-known Brutalist buildings in Britain: a concrete complex of raised walkways, towers, a lake and a conservatory, with theatres, cinemas and galleries alongside the concert hall. The whole complex was listed Grade II in 2001. The City of London Corporation owns and funds it. The Barbican Hall is the home of the London Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra is also based there.
