Amsterdam

Concertgebouw

A group of Amsterdam citizens set out in 1881 to give the city a proper concert hall, and they chose a design by Adolf Leonard (Dolf) van Gendt. The building went up on a field then just outside the city limits, near the new Rijksmuseum, and after delays over roads and lighting it opened on 11 April 1888. For the Main Hall van Gendt took his model from the Neue Gewandhaus in Leipzig, working before acoustics was a science, and the result is one of the most admired acoustics in the world, with a long, rich reverberation. Later restorations have kept the original design as far as possible so as not to disturb it. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has been the resident orchestra since its first concert there in November 1888.
