Großes Festspielhaus

The Large Festival Hall was built for the Salzburg Festival to plans by the architect Clemens Holzmeister, with Herbert von Karajan closely involved in the design of the auditorium. It sits behind the old façade of the prince-archbishops’ stables and is partly cut into the Mönchsberg: between 1956 and 1960 some 55,000 cubic metres of rock were blasted out to make room. It opened on 26 July 1960 with Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier under Karajan. The almost square auditorium seats 2,179, and its large stage serves both opera and concerts. The Vienna Philharmonic has been the festival’s core orchestra since its first music programme in 1922, and it gives concerts in this house during the festival.
