Philharmonie Berlin
Hans Scharoun’s Philharmonie opened in 1963 to replace the orchestra’s old hall, destroyed in the war. It stood at the edge of West Berlin, close to the Wall, and after reunification it found itself near the new centre around Potsdamer Platz. Its tent-like roof and bright yellow skin make it easy to spot. Inside, Scharoun put the orchestra in the middle, with the audience on terraces rising around it, the so-called vineyard layout. The design was controversial at first but has since become a model for concert halls around the world, from Tokyo to Paris. A Chamber Music Hall, planned with the main building, was added some twenty years later. The Philharmonie is the home of the Berliner Philharmoniker, which gives most of its Berlin concerts in the Great Hall.
