Wiener Konzerthaus
The Konzerthaus was built between 1911 and 1913 by the theatre architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer with Ludwig Baumann, as a house for a wider public than the older Musikverein. Emperor Franz Joseph attended the opening on 19 October 1913, when Richard Strauss’s Festliches Präludium was followed by Beethoven’s Ninth. The building mixes late historicism, Secession and Art Nouveau, and its three original halls, the Great Hall, the Mozart Hall and the Schubert Hall, were designed so that concerts could run in all of them at once without disturbing each other. A renovation around the turn of the millennium added a fourth, the Berio Hall. The Vienna Symphony is resident here, and the Vienna Philharmonic also gives concerts in the Great Hall.
