Conductor

Fabio Luisi

Italian · 1959

Fabio Luisi, born in Genoa in 1959, is one of the most widely engaged conductors of his generation, with a career spanning the great opera houses and concert halls of Europe, America and Asia. Trained as a pianist at the Paganini Conservatory in his home city, he came to conducting through his work as an accompanist and studied the craft in Graz. He built his reputation in the German-speaking world, notably as chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Semperoper, and went on to a major international career, including a period as principal conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Today he holds a remarkable trio of positions: music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, principal conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and chief conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo. Equally at home in opera and the symphonic repertoire, and a noted champion of less-familiar music alongside the core classics, Luisi is admired for the warmth, polish and architectural clarity of his music-making.
