Conductor

Sir Simon Rattle

British · 1955

Sir Simon Rattle, born in Liverpool in 1955, is one of the most celebrated conductors of his generation and a figure of special importance to the London Symphony Orchestra, which he served as Music Director from 2017 to 2023 (he remains closely associated with it as Conductor Emeritus). He first made his name transforming the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra into a world-class ensemble, then led the Berlin Philharmonic for sixteen years (2002–2018), and is now chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich. Renowned for the breadth of his repertoire, his commitment to contemporary and twentieth-century music, and the vividness and detail of his music-making, he brings to this programme of Bartók and the dazzling Spanish colour of de Falla exactly the rhythmic flair and orchestral imagination for which he is famous.
